Constipation is a problem that usually goes untreated when ever it occurs. Most people experience irregularity more frequently than any other condition. In general, however, you’re probably experiencing constipation if you pass fewer than three stools a week, and your stools are hard and dry. In more difficult cases, constipation may also include nausea, severe abdominal or lower back pain, and even bloody stool.
Constipation can be caused by a variety of factors. In the vast majority of cases, poor diet and a lack of physical exercise are thought to be the cause of the constipation-and where not the actual cause, at least contributing factors. The most common causes of constipation are a diet low in fiber or a diet high in fats, such as cheese, eggs, and meats. If your dealing with frequent constipation, your not alone. In fact, its estimated over four million people in the United States experience frequent or continuous constipation, making it the most common gastrointestinal problem in the country.
Many Common Irregularities Causes
The small intestines liquefy solid foods so that nutrients can be taken up into the bloodstream and delivered to the liver for processing. Once the nutrients are extracted, the colon (large intestine) and the end of the small intestine reabsorb most of the water for use in other parts of the body. When the body is dehydrated, the motility of the lower intestines slows down to allow more time for reabsorption of water from the fecal contents. This water-preservation method results in chronic constipation, which can predispose a person to cancer of the colon and rectum. Constipation is most often caused by a low-fiber diet, lack of physical activity, not drinking enough water, or delay in going to the bathroom when you have the urge to defecate. Stress, travel, and pain medicines can also contribute to constipation or other changes in bowel habits.Other times, diseases of the bowel such as irritable bowel syndrome, pregnancy, certain medical conditions like an underactive thyroid or cystic fibrosis, mental health problems, neurological diseases, or medications may be the reason for your constipation. More serious causes, like colon cancer, are much less common. Whatever the cause of chronic constipation, it is a condition I feel should never be ignored. The first step would be to rule out medical conditions, such as colon cancer, colon polyps, IBS, diverticulitis, and Crohn’s Disease. Detoxing is something I do at least twice a year, as well as doing smaller maintenance cleanses throughout the year. It’s probably my number one suggestion for better health.
Medical Problems That Cause Constipation
Ignoring the urge to pass a stool also leads to chronic constipation. If ignored often enough, this urge can completely disappear. People will often suppress the urge because they do not want to use a public toilet due to its unhygienic state. Children will also often ignore the urge to pass a stool if they are in an unfamiliar environment, or simply because they do not want to interrupt an enjoyable activity. Septicemia is a systemic infection, usually caused by bacteria of various types contaminating a persons blood. When septicemia is not treated with the appropriate antibiotics, the infected blood can then contaminate other organs or tissues of the body, creating life-threatening infections. There are many things that can cause septicemia, most notably, cuts that have become infected.
The problem afflicts both type 1 and type 2 diabetes sufferers and is known to be significantly more prevalent among those diabetics who also suffer from nerve damage. A variety of underlying issues could be to blame for the constipation, from the aforementioned nerve damage to low thyroid hormone levels and, occasionally, undiagnosed tumors. If you or a diabetic loved one are experiencing frequent constipation, a barium enema or other form of evaluation may be necessary. Consult your physician for further details.
In addition to diabetes, there are a number of neurological conditions that cause constipation problems. Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, strokes, and spinal cord injuries have all been known to cause constipation. But unlike diabetes where the constipation is caused by dehydration, this is not the case with neurological disorders. Constipation aries due to the signals coming from the brain and because of that the muscular tracts from the gastrointestines have problems.
In order for the body to have normal bowel movements, Peristaltic Action is necessary. Peristaltic Action is the natural movement within the body that pushes food from the stomach into the intestines. Afterwards, the action pushes the waste from the intestines through the colon and out the rectum. When signals from the brain are not sent or received properly, Peristaltic Action will not occur properly and constipation is the result. Even though the medications to treat neurological disorders may aid in the transmission of the signals, they may still cause constipation due to dehydration..
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic constipation are disorders of recurrent colonic symptoms and neither has a clear-cut etiology. IBS is a common disorder of the intestines in which altered motility, abnormal visceral sensation, and psychosocial factors produce characteristic IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and mucus in feces. Because IBS can cause chronic constipation, it is difficult for clinicians to distinguish between these 2 presentations.
Eating a diet rich in fiber will help prevent the onset of chronic constipation. Fiber helps add bulk to stool while also drawing water into the gastrointestinal tract and softening stool in the process. Fiber will help keep the gastrointestinal tract clear but it will not help remove the feces clinging to the sides of the colon and intestines. Therefore, the potential for future blockages and chronic constipation remain..
One of the surest ways to reduce chances for future blockages is to periodically employ a colon cleanser. Colon Cleansing will rid the body of bad toxins and blockage and it will also help to prevent future problems as well. This method will remove any fecal matter sticking to the intestine walls and reduce the chances of future blockage. For this effect to take place the product must be an all natural substance. Colon cleansers that are not made will all natural ingredients may contain harsh chemicals that may lead to dehydration or other harmful side effects.
