One of the greatest advances in the study of potential cancer treatments to date is the use of "aspirin every day" to reduce the risk and the spread of colon cancer. Researchers around the world quickly grasped the idea and the study has produced a variety of different outcomes of most of which seems "too good to be true."
In the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, studied the results of aspirin in the third stage more than 800 cancer patients. Each of them received standard chemotherapy and surgery, however, a few selected were also given 325 mg aspirin regularly. At the end of the study found that the group had taken aspirin dose were more than 50% reduction in recurrence in the group received only chemotherapy after surgery. Surprising, right?
In 2003, the New England Journal of Medicine published a review Two separate studies and Ernest Hawk's (head of research of gastrointestinal cancer prevention at the National Cancer Institute) response to them. One study focused on people who had already been diagnosed with colon cancer. Some of them received the standard adult dose of aspirin (325 mg) the other day and given a placebo pill. They observed the patients for one year, after which they found that the aspirin group had thirty-seven percent (37%) least developed growths. The second study looked at people who had a history of polyps, however, this time a dose lower than aspirin. This produced a nineteen percent (19%) reduction in the risk of polyps and, unfortunately, the regular dose had no benefit. Earnest Hawk reviewed both studies and concluded that there was no good explanation for the difference in dosage, but he implored the audience to focus on the fact that both studies have shown that aspirin, in fact, have anti-cancer effects.
Dr. John Baron of Dartmouth Medical School conducted a similar study and the results registered on Yahoo! News in April this year. Their study was intended to see whether aspirin could prevent recurrence of polyps after the growths have been removed during routine colonoscopies. He found that size 80-milligram baby aspirin taken daily may reduce this risk by nineteen percent (19%), a result similar to previous study. He noted that the test dose is the same doses and taken by millions of average Americans in an effort to prevent heart attacks. These studies will only be an additional benefit.
Federal health officials say they are close to recommending that daily doses of aspirin be considered for patients who have had polyps. This suggestion, however, can not be given until they are one hundred percent (100%) to ensure that aspirin actually reduces development of polyps. With this in mind, have decided to wait until receiving the results of future studies.
And so the studies continue to show that only a daily dose of "every day" aspirin may reduce the development of colon cancer. In the words of the researcher, Dr. John Baron, "[while] Aspirin is clear, is not a magic solution, "which could very well be the alternative treatment you have been looking for.
