They can, however, cause painless rectal bleeding or bleeding not evident at first glance. It may be single or multiple polyps. Polyps larger than 1 cm have a higher cancer risk associated with them than polyps under 1 centimeter. The Polyps with atypia or dysplasia are also more likely to progress to colon cancer. The risk of cancer is much higher in sessile adenomas than in pedunculated tubular adenomas. Cancer is found in 40% of adenomas, compared with 15% in tubular adenomas.

Chemotherapy also is used to treat patients with stage IV colon cancer. Surgery remains the primary treatment while chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy may be recommended depending on the staging of each patient.
