southern colony facts
Australia is the southernmost continent in the southern hemisphere, with the exception of Antarctica. It is also the youngest and by far the most unique in to weather, animals and plant life.
The continent is said to have been populated by humans sometime between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago, but the first Europeans do not become established until 1788, when the British established a penal colony in New South Wales.
The population grew gradually from this humble beginning, and five additional car British Crown colonies came to him during the 19th century.
The Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901 in the British original six colonies. It remains a community of today and has a total population of about 21 million people who reside mainly in the state capital mainland of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane Perth and Adelaide. Politically, the Queen of England is also Queen of Australia, a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government.
The Governor General is the Queen's official representative at the federal level, the governors of each state Southern Oceans. The Most of the land is desert or semi-arid climate. It is also the oldest continent and has soils with low fertility.
The only areas with temperate climates are found in southeast and southwest corners of the continent. The northern sector is actually a tropical forest, which also includes mangrove swamps, grassland and desert topography.
There are, however, a select group of mountain areas high enough and cold enough temperatures in support activities for winter skiing and snowboarding.
Further proof of the uniqueness of Australia, is exemplified by the various animals and plants, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet.
A good example includes the marsupials such as koalas, kangaroos and wombats. Unique birds like the emu Kookaburra and also native only to Australia.
The representative plant species are too numerous to name, but many, many are also nowhere else on Earth.
Most of the 21 million Australians are descendants of European settlers who migrated during the 19th and 20th centuries. Indigenous peoples such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders number just over 400,000 or more than 2 percent of the population.
